The Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (hereinafter referred to as “STU”), the largest technical university in Slovakia, is a modern educational and research institution. The rich old tradition of its activity is linked-up to the Mining Academy in Banská Štiavnica, established by Maria Theresa. The STU is providing a comprehensive and modern system of university education, research and cooperation with the world of work through the knowledge transfer. The STU disposes of the widest spectrum of the study branches. Since its establishment in 1937 more than 112 000 graduates have completed their education at the University, and the average number of students attending annually is 19 000. At present, the University consists of seven faculties and two institutes, offering the study within the accredited study programs, in the complex system of Bachelor’s, Engineer’s (Master’s) and Doctoral degree courses. The STU offers comprehensive education in a three-cycle credit system in the broad spectrum of technical branches, branches and programs aimed at art and the humanities as well as in the teacher training concentrations. The research-based practical training is among the priorities too. The system of education is connected with the prestigious partner universities in the framework of international programs (Lifelong Learning, Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci) using the modern methods of education, laboratories and practical training. It is aimed at the study branches with stable opportunities of students’ employment at the labor market. The STU offers education in foreign languages, primarily in the following areas: civil engineering and mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry and food technology, architecture.
International cooperation is a significant area based on interactive contact with educational as well as scientific-research institutions of the countries all over the world. First of all, it is focused on solution of the joint projects within the EU framework and other international programs, mobility of students, teaching staff and researchers. The STU has an active contract collaboration with foreign countries (inter-governmental university and faculty framework agreements), linked-up to membership in international organizations, participation in international events abroad and their organization and realization at the STU.
Today, one of the main tasks of the STU is the active policy in the area of foreign students’ recruitment. The number of foreign students at individual STU faculties has been raised several times during the past six years; at the moment, almost 600 foreign students attend all the STU faculties. The STU creates for the students high-quality conditions for the study and for active use of free time. The University gives space for development of foreign students’ recruitment, especially those from the non-member EU countries.
